Food traditions

With the new year and all, Mitch and I have been doing some planning. We now have a tradition of planning a fun family outing for each month of the year (thanks for the idea, Aunt Kay!). We plan it out at the beginning of the year…of course there are some changes as the year goes by, but it’s really fun to have a fun event to look forward to each month. Last year, we did a trip to a pumpkin farm, a kite festival, family vacation on the beach…fun! This year, we’ve got some new things planned like a Polar Express train ride for December, a trip to the zoo, baseball spring training in March, and a camping adventure for June (unless we come to our senses).

My fridge. My happy place.

You can never have too many lists though (right??). So I also want to plan out some food traditions for each month–mainly around holidays, it seems–so I can look forward to that, too. Hide your eyes if you are hoping to see anything healthy in this post.

Here’s what I’ve got so far:

January Angel food cake for Miles’ birthday

February Valentine’s Tea Party with the girls with red velvet cupcakes, flourless chocolate cake with raspberries for Mitch, cake for Sweet Cheeks’ first (!!) birthday, wine and cheese for the first Carolina vs. Duke game (I love being the wine and cheese crowd.)

March Green eggs and ham (ok, probably bacon!) for Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2, hot dogs at spring training, beer and pizza for the second Carolina vs. Duke game, spinach soup for St. Patrick’s Day

April Homemade lemon curd on crepes for Easter, almond cake for our anniversary

May Mary Poppins’ style tea party on the day of the kite festival, cinch de mayo margaritas and mexican night

June Ice cream month (my plan is to pull out my mixer attachment and make batch after batch of ice cream until we get sick of it or–more likely–until the month is over), something with beans and/or lentils for Mitch for Father’s Day

July 4th of July cookout with grass fed worcestershire sauce burgers, ice cream cake for Baby Cupcake’s 3rd birthday

August Truck Day 2014 (our truck’s 1st birthday) with a hike and a tailgate party featuring sausage biscuits

September bluegrass festival picnic

October Pumpkin month–all things pumpkin, certain to include pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin bread, and pumpkin butter

November Bring on Thanksgiving

December Christmas tree tailgate with lots of snacks especially coffee with bailey’s, cheese and crackers; Holiday treats to include: CLEMENTINES!, ginger time cookies, chocolate peppermint bark, candy cane cookies, tamales during Christmas vacation, December 24: White Chili by Mitch, December 31: Paella also by Mitch

Let’s get going! In the meantime, I’ve got a lot of vegetables to eat to make up for all of these non-veggie celebrations…
